Astronomy students present their scale solar system models to the 4th and 5th graders. Even using the football field we were only able to show the inner planets, Mercury through Mars. With the Sun about 3 feet in size, the planets were small beads. The high school kids fielded many questions from the 4th and 5th graders.

First-grade students recently read a story called “Fiddle Sticks.” In the story, the Superkids play a game where they tell a story by passing a stick from one Superkid to the next to tell a new part of the story. At the end of the week, they were able to play their own fiddle stick game, where they came up with crazy stories about eating pizza with dinosaurs and getting lost on the way to school.

The fifth grade class is wrapping up Unit 2 on the Maya, Aztec, and the Inca civilizations. We have been working hard on our end of the unit Codex Project, in which we write a paragraph about an aspect of each civilization. Students chose to write about either the architecture, farming methods, or social classes of each empire. Once we finish writing our paragraphs, we will draw images representing an aspect of each empire, age our paper, and decorate it with hieroglyphics to give our project the look of an authentic codex.

This week finds our chemistry students learning to test for certain gases produced during a chemical reaction. They use a burning splint or a glowing splint in a test tube of the gas. Hydrogen gas, oxygen gas and carbon dioxide gas all react differently with the splint test. This test is often a first test to identify gases that are products of a chemical reaction. The hydrogen gas was the favorite with the burning splint because it produces a “bark!”

In Kindergarten we have been studying how things grow. We collected apple seeds from our apples at breakfast and put them in baggies with paper towels on the window. One of them sprouted and we are now doing our best to grow an apple tree that we can plant on school grounds at the end of the year. The kids love watching their tree grow!

The Public Speaking class (aka Speech class) recently completed a lesson on reading children's books. The students had to choose a book and deliver it knowing their audience would be young children. They had the opportunity to practice their speeches when the class presented their books to the kindergarten and third grade classes. Not only did the high school students get to share their fun stories but they also got to work on important speaking skills. Skills the students focused on included vocal variety, vocal characterization, eye contact, and body language.

The 5th Grade students are starting a new unit in Language Arts! We will be learning about the Early American Civilizations, focusing specifically on the Maya, Aztec, and the Inca civilizations. After reading our first informational text, we learned that a successful civilization is defined by people living in a well-organized way. The components of a civilization include structured cities, farms, government, religion, social classes, art and architecture, as well as a system for recording information. We are excited to take this journey where we learn how to analyze and synthesize informational text.
